I believe that this visualization is a
great demonstration of the link between technologies in education as it
demonstrates how all children at school (grades 3-12) are integrating
technology into the classroom to help their learning. The data that the
visualization displays is interesting to analyze as it seems that most kids, no
matter what age, are using similar technologies in the classroom. This is
particularly noteworthy as even though the kids in the different grades would
be completing very different learning activities, they are all using the same
technologies (almost).
Personal smartphones seem to be the most
used technology, while school provided smartphones are the least used. This
indicates that kids are making use of their own technology, rather than the
technology provided by the school. The same thing occurs when comparing
personal tablets to school tablets and personal laptop to school provided
laptops. To increase technology in education, more schools could provide more
technological resources to their students – something indicated by the
visualization findings.
I believe this is a good visualization as
it clearly represents the different findings of technological use in school
through a logical, grid set up, with different sized circles and percentages to
easily let the reader understand the usage rates. These circles serve to
quickly and efficiently communicate to the user the information concerning the
different usage by each group. The use of size, colour, shape and layout are
all good aspects of a visualization, which serve to show how technology and
education can overlap.
The use of technology in the classroom indicates the direction that learning is going. In order to further develop this field, students will need access to new technologies when they become available. Up until now, students have typically used their own technology, but if schools want to give them the best opportunity to use technology in the classroom, then they should try to provide it.
